Sanuki Udon is an udon joint run by a really fit Japanese dude who drives a really rocking classic Land Rover. Perhaps the oddest thing about this joint is its location. Located in a really quiet neighbourhood off Old Klang Road it’s tucked away in a row of shops which can be aptly described as either dead or dying. Aside from Sanuki Udon theres nothing noteworthy in that area to talk of and I suppose the residents like it that way (I know I did when I used to live there a decade ago).

Look out for this sign.

It’s actually not too surprising to find an authentic Japanese restaurant in the Taman Desa vicinity as the Japanese community actually has a pronounced presence there. If anything it’s surprising that Taman Desa is not more like Sri Hartamas where Japanese and Korean restaurants are a dime in a dozen.

House Special with Egg (RM 5.00)

Personally I think this is the piece de resistance of the menu. This is a simple dish with really fresh hand made udon plus a runny egg and trace amounts of udon soup. The way I eat this is to mix in the optional chili paste and stir everything up. The taste and texture of the whole dish is like chili pan mee only with a Japanese twist (and far less anchovies).

Kitsune Udon (RM 6.00)

Now if I’m not mistaken Kitsune is Japanese for fox but there are no foxes in this bowl of udon. On the contrary, the only extra topping you get with this udon is a piece of sweet tofu. Didn’t try this so I can’t vouch for the taste.

Curry Udon (RM 7.00)

This is the typical Japanese type of curry, which means it’s more sweet than spicy. Quite nice if you know what to expect. This is not your typical curry laksa noodles

Dry “Cha Cheong” Style (RM 6.00).

Again, this is pretty Japanese-fied. “Cha Cheong” is the Chinese styled minced meat with bean sauce but at Sanuki Udon their sauce is a bit sweeter than the usual Chinese variety. Again, it’s good if you know what to expect.

Sanuki Udon comes highly recommended from this blogger. It’s a great little shop with fresh hand made and delicious udon dishes with reasonable prices. Where else can you get udon + drinks for under RM10 per person. Only caveat is the serving can be a little small for some people.

Ever since I came across the concept of omakase from my favourite food blog of all time I’ve been dying to try it out. So what’s omakase exactly? To sum things up its a Japanese term that simply means “It’s up to you” as in you’re telling the chef to serve you according to what he thinks is best. The assumption here is that the chef will try to impress you with his culinary skills and serve you the freshest/best ingredients that the restaurant has to offer. Kinda exciting, isn’t it?.

Prices vary from restaurant to restaurant (obviously) but you can expect to spend RM200 to RM300 per person for omakase. While it certainly isn’t cheap it’s probably cheaper than ordering all the items you are served ala-carte. Plus you don’t have to fuss over what’s good in the restaurant. If there’s anyone who knows it would be the chef, right?

I didn’t quite know where to go for omakase so I followed masak-masak’s recommendation and went to this Japanese restaurant located within Federal Hotel.

Kapoh Muneharu (used to be Sushi Dokoro Maeshima under a different chef/owner)

It was a Saturday night and the place was quite empty. Throughout the night including our table, probably no more than 4 tables were occupied. However I think we were the only local patrons there that night. The others were Japanese which is a vote of confidence for this place.

Tatami room (well not really tatami)

Since I had made a reservation we were seated in a 2 table tatami room with those funny sunk tables so that you can pretend you’re sitting on the floor like in a Japanese home I guess. The room was decent and clean. We were seated and then given a menu (which was hand written and had pictures manually glued onto them! lol). I asked the Chinese waitress what’s on the menu for omakase… she didn’t seem to understand what I wanted so I didn’t bother to pursue. I left it to lady luck to see what we’ll be getting.

First up was the gorgeous starter. On the plate were baby squids, hiyayakko (cold) tofu and some fried fish. As a fan of sotong in general I loved the squids.

Next was a delectable selection of sashimi (raw fish slices). Can’t say I know what I ate at all but they were fresh and tasty.

Complimentary Potato Salad for Kit Yi. We ate some and it was actually quite nice

Chawanmushi (steamed eggs). Strangely this dish is served cold, usually they are served warm straight out from the steamer. That orange looking pile on top is uni (sea urchin) roe.

From the never ever tried something like this before books. That ball there is actually made out of mashed lotus root. That little bit of gravy there is most likely made of some fermented bean sauce. This was quite an excellent dish.

Grilled beef done right. The beef was well cooked and juicy. They are dabbled in a dash of sweet teriyaki sauce to enhance its flavour.

Managed to sneak a picture of the Japanese chef hard at work.

A selection of sushi and miso soup. The one in the middle is obviously not fish. Looks like pork but didn’t matter what it was really as long as it tasted great.

Wrapped up with some Matcha (green tea) ice cream. I think this dish was obviously made in house. It didn’t taste like any of the usual green tea ice cream you can buy in stores.

The total damage that night was RM 460 for 2 pax. If you ask me whether it was worth it well I have mixed feelings about that. The quality of the food we were served that night was obviously good. However it doesn’t seem like a lot of food for RM 230 per person I must say I was left feeling a little unsatisfied.

The first day of the Chinese New Year this year happened to fall on the very same day as that most dreaded of humankind celebrations; Valentine’s Day. I’m not particularly opposed to celebrating Valentine’s it’s just that I have no fondness of crowded places. Also restaurants tend to be overwhelmed on that particular day causing service and food quality levels to drop significantly. But then again it’s the Chinese New Year, most people would have taken the chance to go back to their hometowns. So was there hope for a crowd free dinner for me and my lovely wife?

Daidomon @ Great Eastern Mall, Ampang.

YES! We actually managed to secure a booking (I think it was one or two days before) and the dinner itself was a stress free event. Kudos to the management and staff at Daidomon. They were definitely running at near full capacity that night but service was prompt and decent.

It was our first time at Daidomon so we really didn’t know what to expect and how the buffet works. The waiter who served us was quick to pick that point up so he offered to recommend us some dishes to start. Basically the process at Daidomon is pretty simple. There is the buffet spread at the middle of the restaurant where you can pick up food that’s ready to eat. Aside from that you are also given a menu from which you can order meat to barbecue.

Waiter’s recommendation #1: Mixed Seafood

Waiter’s recommendation #2: Mixed beef

Some items from the buffet spread. The egg on the left was damned nice

There are 2 premium items on the menu which you can only order once. I can understand why they are made premium items (expen$ive) but personally I don’t think they were any good. The best stuff Daidomon has to offer is definitely their red meat selection.

Premium Item #1: Oysters in butter

Premium Item #2: Scallops

Check out their comprehensive website for more details.
